Free from the Stronghold of Obsession

Obsession first slithers in unnoticed as a need to fill a void. Once in, obsession grips our lives. It can imprison its hosts and others around them. It sometimes brings compulsion along with it.

When obsession brings compulsion in, neat box-like time slots control what the host does and says. It even controls when. If this stronghold takes root and develops, it soon takes over the host’s life.

If obsession is left undetected and allowed to flourish it will bring extreme selfishness, perfectionism, addiction, religion, superstition, fear, rage, worry, or any number of other strongholds into the life of its host. As it builds its domain, it can also develop a stronghold of mental illness

Many hosts [victims of this demon] are isolated and fearful. They become disoriented and insecure. Lacking the confidence to move forward without the obsession, the host no longer can function properly. The obsession becomes an idol that will completely take the place of God and the freedom found in Jesus Christ.

No amount of reasoning can remove this stronghold without the host’s permission. So it’s vital that the host understands and recognizes the stronghold and seeks help.

5 Biblical tips to end obsession:

1. Let the Word of God take precedence in your life. When we allow Jesus first place in our lives, obsessions cannot control us.

John 1:1-5 In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was already with God in the beginning. 3Everything came into existence through him. Not one thing that exists was made without him. 4He was the source of life, and that life was the light for humanity. 5The light shines in the dark, and the dark has never extinguished it.

2. Allow your thoughts to reflect God’s goodness, grace, peace, and mercy.

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

Mark 7:20-23 He continued, “It’s what comes out of a person that makes him unclean. 21Evil thoughts, sexual sins, stealing, murder, adultery, 22greed, wickedness, cheating, shameless lust, envy, cursing, arrogance, and foolishness come from within a person. 23All these evils come from within and make a person unclean.”

3. Trust in Jesus Christ, knowing that He has redeemed your life. He will also deliver you from obsession.

1 Peter 1:3-5 Praised (honored, blessed) be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah)! By His boundless mercy we have been born again to an ever-living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,  4[Born anew] into an inheritance which is beyond the reach of change and decay [imperishable], unsullied and unfading, reserved in heaven for you, 5Who are being guarded (garrisoned) by God’s power through [your] faith [till you fully inherit that final] salvation that is ready to be revealed [for you] in the last time.

4. Fight the good fight of faith. Refuse defeat. You are not battling against flesh and blood.

1 Timothy 6:12 Fight the good fight of the faith; lay hold of the eternal life to which you were summoned and [for which] you confessed the good confession [of faith] before many witnesses.

Ephesians 6:12 For we are not wrestling with flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the despotisms, against the powers, against [the master spirits who are] the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spirit forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) sphere.

5. Your battle has already been won by Christ on the cross. You need only to believe.

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 For the weapons of our warfare are not physical [weapons of flesh and blood], but they are mighty before God for the overthrow and destruction of strongholds, [Inasmuch as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One),
