Free from the Stronghold of Boredom

In our fast paced world, the last thing we should be subject to is boredom. It’s more logical to seek a time of rest and relaxation. But it happens. Boredom infiltrates our lives as a result of selfishness, slothfulness, lassitude, disinterest in God and His Word, wantonness, apathy, tedium, and much more. These strongholds begin with wrong thinking.

Boredom

Boredom says, “It’s all about me.”

Boredom can be nurtured early in life. A parent who controls every aspect of a child’s life can inadvertently disable the child into thinking they need to be continually entertained and that the parent is responsible for every moment of their lives.

If your child is irrationally bored, allow them to work alongside you, ask them for suggestions of how they can help. Teach them about God’s will for them as soon as possible.

Teaching them the benefit of helping others will continue way into adulthood. Reward their efforts, allow them some space [don't control every aspect--they will make mistakes and their work may not be perfect]. Allow them to choose activities of their own.

Boredom promotes a feeling of utter weariness and discontent. It can border depression and hopelessness. It comes on us from lack of interest. Boredom says, “It’s all about me”, or “I must be entertained or I will be listless, bored, and without aim.”

The best way to combat boredom before it becomes a stronghold is to get interested.

A bored person is the only one in the picture.

5 Biblical tips in overcoming boredom:

1. Help someone, somewhere, somehow. There’s no time to get bored when you’re sharing your time with others.

Ephesians 4:29 Don’t say anything that would hurt another person. Instead, speak only what is good so that you can give help wherever it is needed. That way, what you say will help those who hear you.

1 John 3:17 Now, suppose a person has enough to live on and notices another believer in need. How can God’s love be in that person if he doesn’t bother to help the other believer?

2. Get to know your Creator and Savior. If you really knew your Creator and Savior, you wouldn’t be bored. The excitement in knowing the truth about God will knock any boredom to pieces.

Mark 16:14 Still later Jesus appeared to the eleven apostles while they were eating. He put them to shame for their unbelief and because they were too stubborn to believe those who had seen him alive.

Proverbs 14:14 A heart that turns from God becomes bored with its own ways, but a good person is satisfied with God’s ways.

Psalm 94:7-9  and they say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob does not perceive.”8 Understand, O dullest of the people! Fools, when will you be wise? 9 He who planted the ear, does he not hear? He who formed the eye, does he not see?

3. Spend time whenever you can to share the good news of God. If in no other way, than at least partner with someone who does.

1 Corinthians 9:23 I do all this for the sake of the Good News in order to share what it offers.

Proverbs 25:25 Like cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far [home] country.

Mark 16:15 And He said to them, Go into all the world and preach and publish openly the good news (the Gospel) to every creature [of the whole human race].

Philippians 1:5 [I thank my God] for your fellowship (your sympathetic cooperation and contributions and partnership) in advancing the good news (the Gospel) from the first day [you heard it] until now.

4. Spend time in worship. Give God a sacrifice of praise, and honor. Dance, sing, shout the praises of your Lord and Savior. Give [share] even when you don’t think you have it to give.

John 4:24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Malachi 1:12 “All except you. Instead of honoring me, you profane me. You profane me when you say, ‘Worship is not important, and what we bring to worship is of no account,’ and when you say, ‘I’m bored—this doesn’t do anything for me.’ You act so superior, sticking your noses in the air—act superior to me, God-of-the-Angel-Armies! And when you do offer something to me, it’s a hand-me-down, or broken, or useless. Do you think I’m going to accept it? This is God speaking to you!

5.Have hope. Wait expectantly for His return. Hope is to look forward to with desire and reasonable confidence. A person who has hope can no longer be bored.

Psalm 39:7 And now, Lord, what do I wait for and expect? My hope and expectation are in You.

Jeremiah 17:7 [Most] blessed is the man who believes in, trusts in, and relies on the Lord, and whose hope and confidence the Lord is.

1 Peter 1:3 Praised (honored, blessed) be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah)! By His boundless mercy we have been born again to an ever-living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

2 Thessalonians 2:16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, Who loved us and gave us everlasting consolation and encouragement and well-founded hope through [His] grace (unmerited favor),

Revelation 21:4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There won’t be any more death. There won’t be any grief, crying, or pain, because the first things have disappeared.”
