Free from the Stronghold of Spite

Before the thought of spite brings the spirit of spite into our lives, it must be stopped. The bitter ill will of spite can destroy the host as well as its victim.

The host [the person harboring the spirit of spite] then becomes the victim as well as the host–of evil intent. If spite continues it can set up a stronghold [in our lives] that, if not broken, will kill, steal, and destroy.

Spite begins as a malicious but petty desire to harm, annoy, frustrate, or humiliate another person. As we move forward to stop strongholds in our lives we recognize spite through the other spiritual strongholds that invited it.

For example, we clearly see spite in a person who allows gossip to reign in their hearts. The sole objective of gossip is malicious and spiteful. Strongholds inviting spite also include offense, bitterness, hate, lies, prejudice, selfishness, defiance, rebellion, and many others.

If you recognize a stronghold in your life or in the life of another the chance is great that spite won’t be far behind. Extreme spite brings murder along with it.

Pray for them which despitefully use you.

5 Biblical tips to be free from spite:

1. Stop thinking ill thoughts of others before they invite spite.

Psalm 10:4 The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.

Matthew 15:19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

Proverbs 21:5 The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want.

2. Commit to thinking about God and His way of doing things.

Isaiah 55:8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.

Isaiah 55:9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

3. Pray for those who are spiteful toward you.

Luke 6:28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.

Matthew 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

4. Replace spite with compassion, kindness, and love.

Ephesians 4:31-32 Let all bitterness and indignation and wrath (passion, rage, bad temper) and resentment (anger, animosity) and quarreling (brawling, clamor, contention) and slander (evil-speaking, abusive or blasphemous language) be banished from you, with all malice (spite, ill will, or baseness of any kind). 32And become useful and helpful and kind to one another, tenderhearted (compassionate, understanding, loving-hearted), forgiving one another [readily and freely], as God in Christ forgave you.

5. Stop spite with respite. Allow God to take revenge. Trust Him to know more about a person’s heart [thoughts and actions] than you do.

Romans 12:19 Don’t take revenge, dear friends. Instead, let God’s anger take care of it. After all, Scripture says, “I alone have the right to take revenge. I will pay back, says the Lord.”
