Free from the Stronghold of Tradition
Not to be confused with celebrations, particularly those God commanded us to keep, and those that glorify God, a stronghold of tradition can rob us of God’s word in our hearts.
Jesus said, "You have turned my Father's house into a gather place for thieves."
This stronghold blinds us from seeing the intense love God has for us and the freedom we’ve been given through Christ.
When tradition sets in superstition is not far behind. Tradition says, “if I don’t eat a certain food, hide myself when the sun sets, wash my hands before I eat, light a certain amount of candles, face east, call God Jehovah, use beads to pray, or whatever tradition man has imposed on us, I will not be blessed, hear from God, have a good harvest, receive salvation, and so forth.”
Whom the Lord sets free is free indeed. That includes being free from our [man made] traditions. We are free to worship God in truth. Not free to follow traditions.
Who told us to start celebrating the day of rest on Sunday? Who said to celebrate Halloween [a day dedicated to witchcraft] and Christmas [a day where a myth has taken precedence]?
Who said to stop celebrating the Feast of Trumpetsj [Rosh Hashanah or the Return of Christ], the Festival of Lights [Hanukkah symbolic for God's everlasting light], Passover [God commanded these holidays for a reason–Jesus was with us from the beginning.
Shelter in God AloneBiblical tips to free us from tradition:
1. Rejoice in knowing that Jesus has set us free from sin. Traditions can enslave us.
Romans 6:16 Do you not know that if you continually surrender yourselves to anyone to do his will, you are the slaves of him whom you obey, whether that be to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience which leads to righteousness (right doing and right standing with God)?
2. Beware of requirements invented by humans.
Colossians 2:8 Be careful not to let anyone rob you of this faith through a shallow and misleading philosophy. Such a person follows human traditions and the world’s way of doing things rather than following Christ.
3. Love God. Place no God’s or idols before God. Then love your neighbors. The greatest commandment is love.
Matthew 22:37-39 (GW)37Jesus answered him, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38This is the greatest and most important commandment. 39The second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.’
4. Turn from the yoke of the bondage of tradition. A study on what God commanded and what evolved into our lives through tradition is helpful.
Matthew 11:29-30 Place my yoke over your shoulders, and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble. Then you will find rest for yourselves 30because my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
5. Celebrate the goodness of God.
Psalm 100:4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving and a thank offering and into His courts with praise! Be thankful and say so to Him, bless and affectionately praise His name!
6. Don’t follow rules that are not from God.
