Free from the Stronghold of Deterioration
Everything eventually deteriorates. Our bodies grow older. New clothes become used and frail. Our homes need repainting, repairing, and replacing when wood rots, walls yellow, roofs begin to leak, pipes rust, and old parts wear out. There isn’t a single thing in life that doesn’t deteriorate. Time and the elements get it all.
How can we ever be free from this challenging stronghold of deterioration? Don’t we eventually have to succumb? Deterioration follows us all wherever we go. When we look back at our lives we see the path of destruction deterioration left behind us. Those days are gone.
Fear of death brings a touch of reality to our thoughts. We try to stop time to no avail. Men look to regain a youth by courting a second childhood. Women lament what might have been if…
1 Corinthians 15:36 You foolish man! Every time you plant seed, you sow something that does not come to life [germinating, springing up, and growing] unless it dies first.
There is no way to regain what is lost except to look forward to a future of hope. We have been promised a new life. Age has no bearing on that promise. This new life will never deteriorate, never wear out or grow old in any way.
5 Biblical tips to overcome deterioration:
1. Let go of what you think is real in the world. This reality is fleeting. It will deteriorate.
John 12:24 I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains [just one grain; it never becomes more but lives] by itself alone. But if it dies, it produces many others and yields a rich harvest.
2. Get everlasting life. When we receive Christ we become renewed. Our bodies may deteriorate, but we have a promise that will never wear out.
Luke 10:25 And then a certain lawyer arose to try (test, tempt) Him, saying, Teacher, what am I to do to inherit everlasting life [that is, to partake of eternal salvation in the Messiah's kingdom]?
John 3:16
For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even]
gave up His only begotten ( unique) Son, so that whoever believes in
(trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to
destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life.
3. Take comfort in your redemption from the second death. Don’t treat it lightly.
Revelation 20:6 Blessed (happy, to be envied) and holy (spiritually whole, of unimpaired innocence and proved virtue) is the person who takes part (shares) in the first resurrection! Over them the second death exerts no power or authority, but they shall be ministers of God and of Christ (the Messiah), and they shall rule along with Him a thousand years.
Revelation 20:14 Then death and Hades ( the state of death or disembodied existence) were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.
4. Keep your thoughts on the good things. When we think about the good things of God and salvation through Jesus Christ we no longer fear deterioration.
James 1:17 Whatever is good and perfect comes down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.
Philippians 4:6-8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
5. Believe the promise of a future without deterioration.
2 Corinthians 5:1 For we know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down (that is, when we die and leave this earthly body), we will have a house in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands.
