Free from the Stronghold of Obscenity

It’s so easy to slip. Things that were obscene in the world generations ago seem to be mainstream today. We don’t realize how offensive we become to God when we allow obscenity in. But with God there are certain criteria that can never be changed.

Through Moses, God set the commandments in motion. Through Jesus, God reiterated the commandments, and emphasized the greatest commandment. If God is supreme, his judgements pure, and his guidance optimal, than obscenity is still an abomination to God.

If obscenity continues to flourish in our lives, it will be a stronghold. As a stronghold obscenity sets the stage for lust, rebellion, intolerance, the wrong kind of tolerance, violence, and many, many other strongholds to enter our lives. These strongholds can put us and others in danger, not only of God’s judgment, but of our own safety.

Obscenity left unchecked is abominable, disgusting, and repulsive–particularly to God. Humanity suffers when honor, good manners, modesty, propriety, and humility take a back seat to this demonic stronghold.

 [You know you've been set apart for Christ if you've been drawn by the Holy Spirit--John 6:44 "For no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me, and at the last day I will raise them up."] The world may conflict with your new values. The good news is that Christ has overcome the world.

1. Let self-control have its perfect work in you. Self control is part of the fruit of the spirit. If you allow the Holy Spirit to guide your path and actions, obscenity will be far from you.

Ephesians 5:4 Let there be no filthiness (obscenity, indecency) nor foolish and sinful (silly and corrupt) talk, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting or becoming; but instead voice your thankfulness [to God].

2. Put on the new self. Those who are in Christ become a new creature. In fact, one of the ways a true believer is evident is in his/her conversion or daily walk. Old things pass away. Striving to honor God increases in our lives.

Colossians 3:7-10 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. 8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.

3. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Your old life no longer has control over you.

2 Timothy 2:22 Shun youthful lusts and flee from them, and aim at and pursue righteousness (all that is virtuous and good, right living, conformity to the will of God in thought, word, and deed); [and aim at and pursue] faith, love, [and] peace (harmony and concord with others) in fellowship with all [Christians], who call upon the Lord out of a pure heart.

4. Aim to build up the faith and goodness of others. A good example is the best witness.

Ephesians 4:29 Let no foul or polluting language, nor evil word nor unwholesome or worthless talk [ever] come out of your mouth, but only such [speech] as is good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need and the occasion, that it may be a blessing and give grace (God’s favor) to those who hear it.

5. Remember that you are in the world but not of the world. Keep hope alive in your heart no matter what’s going on.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 Now also we would not have you ignorant, brethren, about those who fall asleep [in death], that you may not grieve [for them] as the rest do who have no hope [beyond the grave]. 14For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will also bring with Him through Jesus those who have fallen asleep [in death].

John 15:19 If you belonged to the world, the world would treat you with affection and would love you as its own. But because you are not of the world [no longer one with it], but I have chosen (selected) you out of the world, the world hates (detests) you.
