Free from the Stronghold of Profanity

Words slip from the lips of an angry person without restraint. Words that do not bring blessings. Praise and curses come from the same mouth. The stronghold of profanity has found it’s way into our lives even in casual conversation. What we hear and learn becomes a part of us.

Profanity brings destruction.

The world grows numb to expressions using profane words. Media sensors no longer filter out curse words from our programs and social connections.  Mixed up ratings on our media have twisted results. A  PG-13 media program may use God’s name in vain without restraint. Using God’s name in vain is arrogant and self condemning.

In the natural we might not consider how vital our words are. But every idle word will be accounted for someday. That’s a promise from God. If we were made in his image, then our words are capable of creating or destroying. Death and life are in the power of the tongue.

The next time the temptation to blurt out a profane word comes on us we must stop and think. What curse will those words bring back to us or the people we love? Is this going to glorify God? Will my anger be righteous or will it bring destruction?

5 Biblical tips to overcoming profanity:

1. Stop using curses in casual conversation. Remind friends. When we speak words that are known as curses, we bring curses.

James 3:9 With our tongues we praise our Lord and Father. Yet, with the same tongues we curse people, who were created in God’s likeness.

2 Timothy 2:16 But avoid all empty (vain, useless, idle) talk, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness.

Matthew 15:11 It is not what goes into the mouth of a man that makes him unclean and defiled, but what comes out of the mouth; this makes a man unclean and defiles [him].

2. Never use the name of the Lord without restraint, respect, and honor.

Exodus 20:7 You shall not use or repeat the name of the Lord your God in vain [that is, lightly or frivolously, in false affirmations or profanely]; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

3. Use discretion when you speak. Profanity is inconsiderate and demonstrates disrespect and contempt. Show love, consideration, and respect instead.

Job 6:30 Is there injustice on my tongue, or is my mouth unable to tell the difference between right and wrong?

4. Ask God for his help in choosing your words wisely.

1 Peter 3:10 “People who want to live a full life and enjoy good days must keep their tongues from saying evil things, and their lips from speaking deceitful things.

5. Be a good example to others. Your children especially are watching you and hear every word you say. Others around you unconsciously begin to emanate. Let them emanate goodness.

Proverbs 19:25 Punish the insolent—make an example of them. Who knows? Somebody might learn a good lesson.

1 Corinthians 11:1 PATTERN YOURSELVES after me [follow my example], as I imitate and follow Christ (the Messiah).
