This is a huge demonic stronghold. There is a difference between loving and trusting God, and accepting his sacrifice in Jesus Christ, and being religious.
Religious spirits are found in every religion including atheism. The demonic entities attached to a religious demon are unforgiveness, murder, prejudice, envy, hate, gossip, pride, criticism, self righteousness, legalism, confusion, and much more.
According to one minister, ‘a religious spirit is a demon that wages war against the grace of God in our lives and acceptance of Jesus’ work as true fulfillment of God’s covenant between God and man.’ See Great Bible Study.
That evaluation eliminates the fact that religious spirits have been around since the beginning. The serpent tempted Eve with a judgement on God. Satan used pride, gossip, and other demons here to confuse Eve. These religious spirits have tried to ruin people who love God in one way or another since the fall from grace.
Biblical tips to overcome a religious spirit:
1. Get to know and love God in truth.
Matthew 22:36-38 “Teacher, which commandment is the greatest in Moses’ Teachings?”
37Jesus answered him, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38This is the greatest and most important commandment.
2. Trust God in all ways.
Psalm 91:2 I will say to the Lord, “You are my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust.”
3. Don’t judge others. Only God knows our thoughts and our hearts and has a right to judge from that perspective.
Romans 2:1-3 No matter who you are, if you judge anyone, you have no excuse. When you judge another person, you condemn yourself, since you, the judge, do the same things. 2We know that God’s judgment is right when he condemns people for doing these things. 3When you judge people for doing these things but then do them yourself, do you think you will escape God’s judgment?
4. Love. When we’re busy loving others, we don’t have time to criticize, gossip or judge.
1 Peter 4:8 Above all things have intense and unfailing love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins [forgives anddisregards the offenses of others].
Psalm 51:1 HAVE MERCY upon me, O God, according to Your steadfast love; according to the multitude of Your tender mercy and loving-kindness blot out my transgressions.
5. Forgive quickly and easily.
Ephesians 4:31-32 Get rid of your bitterness, hot tempers, anger, loud quarreling, cursing, and hatred. 32Be kind to each other, sympathetic, forgiving each other as God has forgiven you through Christ.
