Free from the Stronghold of Terror
Terror immobilizes its victims. It is a demonic stronghold that controls, debilitates, and wrecks havoc on people and even on whole nations. Today terror is gripping us from all fronts–from religions, from weather changes, from economic downturns, from political despots, from abusive criminals, and from changes in our society. What should we do when terror tries to steal our joy?
Why has terror taken such a hold in our lives? God gave us free will. But he also gave us guidance to use this free will wisely. God is the final authority. Satan wants us to think that it’s up to us to carry out God’s anger by terror, or that God wants to terrorize us.
He has convinced some to think that returning terror for terror is the best solution to whatever the objective is.
Those who give in to the stronghold of terror become victims, they can’t think, they can’t move forward–they are useless for helping others. That’s just where the enemy wants us to be. If we are useless we have no effectiveness for God.
Biblical tips to overcome terror:
1. Do not fight terror with more terror.
Romans 12:19-21 Don’t take revenge, dear friends. Instead, let God’s anger take care of it. After all, Scripture says, “I alone have the right to take revenge. I will pay back, says the Lord.” 20But, If your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him a drink. If you do this, you will make him feel guilty and ashamed.” 21Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil with good.
2. Pursue peace. As much as possible seek peaceful resolutions if the terror is caused by a person or group. Keep peace in your heart if the terror is caused by change, weather, or economy. God will make a way where there seems to be no way.
Psalm 34:14 Turn away from evil, and do good. Seek peace, and pursue it!
3. Pray without ceasing. Make prayer for protection and safety a daily focus.
2 Chronicles 7:14 However, if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves, pray, search for me, and turn from their evil ways, then I will hear their prayer from heaven, forgive their sins, and heal their country.
4. Pray for your enemies. Fasting and prayer is more powerful than any other action we can take.
Matthew 5:44-45 But I tell you this: Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you. 45In this way you show that you are children of your Father in heaven. He makes his sun rise on people whether they are good or evil. He lets rain fall on them whether they are just or unjust.
5. Get to higher, safer ground. Be wise and keep safe.
Proverbs 14:15-17 A gullible person believes anything, but a sensible person watches his step. 16A wise person is cautious and turns away from evil, but a fool is careless and overconfident. 17A short-tempered person acts stupidly, and a person who plots evil is hated.
6. Wait patiently for the promise.
Isaiah 2:3-4 Then many people will come and say, “Let’s go to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways so that we may live by them.” The teachings will go out from Zion. The word of the Lord will go out from Jerusalem. 4Then he will judge disputes between nations and settle arguments between many people. They will hammer their swords into plowblades and their spears into pruning shears. Nations will never fight against each other, and they will never train for war again.
